This unique and striking large-scale abstract wooden sculpture was created by Yasuo Fuke (Kagawa, Japan, 1929) in the 1960s. Carved from richly aged mahogany, the work is a powerful expression of Fuke’s distinctive style, which unites Japanese refinement with Italian modernist sensibility. Its bold, abstract form is at once raw and meticulously refined, revealing both the sculptor’s hand and his masterful control of material. The sculpture is composed of two parts: the main, expansive form resting gracefully on a separate base element that functions as its feet in a functional and aesthetic way. Deeply carved textures and faceted surfaces invite light to play across the wood, creating a dynamic interplay of shadow and depth. The dark, warm tonality of the mahogany enhances the sculpture’s presence, while its abstract yet organic character gives it a sense of timeless monumentality. The work is hand signed by Yasuo Fukes signature on the reverse which is a work of art on its own, affirming its authenticity and further elevating its significance as a collectible object. Remaining in very good original condition, the piece demonstrates Fuke’s ability to transform solid wood into a compelling, almost architectural sculpture that engages both space and viewer. It stands as a rare and evocative example of mid-century abstract art, embodying a synthesis of Eastern sensibility and Western expression. Yasuo Fuke (b. 1929, Kagawa, Japan) studied sculpture at the Accademia di Brera di Belle Arti in Milan, where he immersed himself in the flourishing postwar Italian art scene. His work is defined by a dialogue between Japanese traditions of refinement, balance, and subtlety, and the dynamic, bold formalism of Italian modernism. Often working in richly grained woods, Fuke produced sculptures that explore abstraction, texture, and form with great sensitivity. His practice reflects a cultural bridge, merging two artistic traditions into a singular vision. Today, Fuke’s work is admired for its craftsmanship, depth, and its ability to embody the essence of both Japanese and Italian sculptural languages. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
