Hand-knotted in wool, circa 1920-1929, this oversized square 12x12 antique rug is a sublime, atmospheric addition to Rug & Kilim’s Antique collection. This piece functions as a deeply historic, architectural canvas that honors classic Moorish-influenced Spanish geometric motifs through a beautifully distressed, tonal lens.
On the Design:
Spanish carpets of the early 20th century; particularly those woven during the 1920s Mediterranean Revival period—are celebrated for their seamless integration of European elegance and historic Moorish geometry. This antique carpet perfectly encapsulates that legacy. The canvas showcases a magnificent, all-over ogee trellis motif. The ogee—a classic curvilinear geometric shape with deep roots in Islamic and Spanish architectural antiquities—is rendered here in a subtle, golden-taupe lattice that dances across a warm, sun-faded beige ground. It contains a beautifully intricate floral motif that is repeated in the lattice and occasionally missing its visual authority for the daintiness of the rug.
For contemporary designers and collectors alike, the beauty of this piece lies in its whisper-quiet palette and profound, wabi-sabi character. The distress and tonal nature of the beige and taupe hues allow it to function as an incredibly sophisticated, luminous neutral foundation. Its monumental, nearly square proportions make it an architectural masterstroke for anchoring grand, symmetrical spaces—be it a refined coastal great room, a minimalist sanctuary, or a curated modern study. It is a deeply soulful textile that offers a tactile connection to history, providing an elegant, grounding presence without overwhelming the surrounding interior architecture or fine art.The accompanying book, Golden Light: The Interior Design of Nickey Kehoe by Todd Nickey and Amy Kehoe, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B364) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
