Beloved Japanese Shinto goddess of mirth, joy, and good fortune, Otafuku, also known as Okame is often associated with longevity and fertility. Distinct for her chubby cheek, joyful expression and a plumb body, the finely molded porcelain figurine was made decorated in an Imari kiln circa 1880-1910s, possibly designated for export market. Ther robe of the goddess was rendered in low relief and wonderfully painted in underglaze blue in combination with overglaze iron red, turquoise-green, yellow, black and gold accents. What is unusual of this okimono is its humorous undertone of the sexual and erotic aspect of the goddess. Posed with a basket of assortment of mushrooms hanging on one arm, the goddess is dragging a massive mushroom in the phallus form with red cords behind her. The considerable weight of the mushroom is convincing through her endeavored motion forward.
Otafuku holding mushroom in the phallus shape was more often seen in netsukes made in Edo period. The porcelain rendition, especially in large form like this is rather rare.
