The painting depicts a makeshift street market with groups of vendors gathering by a gate. Dressed in Islamic attire, most figures are woman seating around large basket. An elder bearded man with white turban sits across the street. The street scene was in old Cairo where the artist visited in his traveling, likely the main market street of Al-Muizz. It was painted in the classic orientalist style that showcases local characters in the context of Islamic architecture. The opulent warm colors set in a dramatic light and shadow is the signature of the exotic style.
The painting is signed at lower left corner. The canvas size is 35.25" x 22.5". With frame the dimension is 43.5" x 29.5". The ornate carved giltwood frame was in beautiful antique condition with gold leaf set on red lacquer and it may be the original frame for the work.
Artist Biography:
Franz Richard Unterberger ((1838-1902) was an Austrian Romantic painter known for his atmospheric landscapes, coastal scenes, and cityscapes—especially of Italy and the Adriatic. Born in Innsbruck, he trained at European art academies in Munich, Weimar, and Düsseldorf. While Unterberger is primarily celebrated for his romanticized views of Venice and southern Italy, his travels extended beyond Europe, to Egypt, where this scene was painted.
Unterberger gained international acclaim, exhibiting across Europe and earning the Knight's Cross of the Order of Franz Joseph in 1874. He died in France in 1902. Today, his works remain in demand and are featured in both museum and private collections worldwide. See less
