This is an original abstract painting by Norman Carton (1908–1980), signed by the artist at lower right. It’s a particularly nice example of his gestural abstraction, with broad, heavily worked passages of dark brown and black paint layered over a light ground, along with muted reds, pinks and oranges. Looking closely, you can see how Carton built up the surface, with areas of thick, textured paint alongside thinner, almost dry-brushed passages and loose black lines running through the composition.
Carton was a Ukraine-born American painter and educator who became associated with the New York Abstract Expressionist generation. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under Arthur B. Carles and Henry McCarter and later took courses at the Barnes Foundation. He also worked as a muralist and illustrator and spent much of his later career teaching, including at The New School in New York. His work is held in numerous public and private collections, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Chrysler Museum of Art, the Neuberger Museum of Art, and the Michelson Museum of Art.
The painting is presented in a handsome vintage wood frame with a wide mat. A number of original gallery documents are included with the work.
