A wonderfully distinctive work of Brazilian popular art by Geraldo Magela Barreiros, known as “Magela de Santa Branca.” Painted directly onto an irregular, sculptural section of wood, the piece depicts a colorful Brazilian village landscape populated with small houses, figures, palms, birds, kites, and a roadside religious shrine.
The natural form and texture of the wood are incorporated into the composition, giving the work a particularly strong folk-art character and making it as much an object as a conventional painting. Richly saturated color, flattened perspective, and simplified figures are characteristic of the Brazilian naïve or primitivist tradition.
The work is signed “MAGELA” on the front and retains the artist’s original atelier label on the reverse, identifying him as an Artista Plástico working in Arte Popular Brasileira — “Primitivista” in Santa Branca, São Paulo, Brazil.
Magela’s full name is documented as Geraldo Magela Barreiros. Brazilian academic and archival sources identify him as a primitivist painter associated with Santa Branca; his work was documented in Brazilian naïve-art circles by 1986, and the São Paulo Court of Justice later exhibited his paintings and sculptures, describing his subject matter as the everyday life of rural people.
An appealing and highly individual example of Brazilian naïve and folk art, especially notable for its unusual carved/natural wood support and surviving artist’s label.
Approx. 12” H × 8.25” W x 3.75" D.
