A … Read more Victor Joseph Gatto (1893–1965) was a self-taught American painter associated with the folk, naïve, and modern primitive art movements. A native New Yorker, Gatto began painting in the late 1930s and developed a distinctive style characterized by richly detailed landscapes, urban scenes, animals, and biblical subjects. His imaginative compositions and vivid, unconventional approach earned him comparisons to Henri Rousseau and the nickname “New York’s Rousseau.” Gatto’s first solo exhibition was held at the Charles Barzansky Gallery in New York in 1943, followed by museum and gallery exhibitions throughout his career.

Gatto’s work is represented in significant American institutional collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Whitney Museum of American Art, High Museum of Art, and Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His work has continued to appear in exhibitions devoted to important self-taught American artists, including Gatecrashers: The Rise of the Self-Taught Artist in America. Today, Gatto is recognized for his singular contribution to 20th-century American self-taught art and for a highly individual visual language that bridges folk art and modernism..
