Artist:
Johnson (1936-2022) was born in Hendersonville, NC and settled in Fredericksburg, VA in the 1950's. There he worked as an artist, teacher, humanitarian, and civil rights activist (amongst others). Johnson received his BA frm VSU and his MFA from Howard University. He is a listed artist and has exhibited internationally.
Subject:
As a devout Baptist and deacon in his church, Johnson often leanted towards images of Christianity in his works. This work shows abstract themes of a Madonna and child in mixed media on particle board. This theme is prevalent in other works of Johnsons and may also be referential to his relationship with his sister Helen and his childhood babysitter Mammy Cook.

Condition:
Overall good condition. Some minor wear to the edges of the particle board substrate, but that would be hidden with framing.
