This exceptional 18th to early 19th Century Scandinavian collapsible hand-reel (historically known as a haspel or garnvinda) is a magnificent piece of pre-industrial Nordic folk art. Hand-carved from solid regional hardwood, it features dense, highly meticulous geometric chip-carving including zig-zag borders, vertical columns, and diamond accent panels. During the 1700s (the 18th century), Scandinavian woodworkers extensively relied on mortise-and-tenon joints secured with wooden pegs (dowels) to build multi-piece textile tools like niddy-noddies.
Cultural History
In traditional rural Norwegian and Swedish culture, highly decorative textile implements were carved by young men as custom courting gifts(fästmansgåvor). This tool displays an extraordinary level of care, intentionally engineered with an ingenious collapsible design. By removing the retaining pegs, the crossbar arms could be aligned perfectly flat on a single plane, allowing it to fit seamlessly into a shallow travel chest or basket without breaking the delicate, tapered axe-profile arms.
Patina & Age Clues
The tool boasts an incredible, deep organic patina. The darkened areas on the handle and joints are the result of decades of dynamic handling—where the natural oils from human skin transferred to the bare wood during countless hours of hand-spinning. This surface contrast beautifully highlights the deep-cut manual chisel work .

Good Antique condition. * Displays a gorgeous organic handling patina with minor surface flaking and oxidation to the early stain consistent with historical use. * One original wooden retaining peg is missing and was historically stabilized using a round-headed steel wire nail with a crisscross/chequered head pattern (an authentic, early 20th-century household repair dating to approximately 1900–1930). * The excess length of the repair nail was cut on the reverse side, keeping the joint locked, it’s a little loose though. One factory-drilled alignment hole is present on the repaired joint hub. Attempts to document the item full condition have been made with reasonable effort & in good faith.
