A documented pair of early Richard Schultz for Knoll lounge chairs from the iconic 1966 Leisure Collection, originally purchased in Utah on October 16, 1967.
Designed at the request of Florence Knoll, Richard Schultz’s 1966 Collection is recognized as a landmark of American modern outdoor design. These low-profile lounge chairs feature sculptural white-painted aluminum frames, woven mesh sling seats and backs, and contrasting dark brown sling supports.
The pair is accompanied by an exceptional group of archival materials:
• An original October 16, 1967 sales invoice from Clark Leaming in Ogden, Utah, specifically identifying the purchase of two lounge chairs
• A period advertisement featuring this Richard Schultz chair design
• An original May 9, 1975 letter from Knoll International responding to a request for maintenance guidance for the “leisure furniture”
The original documents shown will accompany the pair.
The chairs are offered in unrestored vintage condition. The mesh has substantial age-related discoloration and staining, along with areas of wear, fraying, separation, distortion and sagging. There appear to be areas of earlier reinforcement or repair to the mesh. The white-painted frames have scattered chips, scratches, scuffs and finish wear, while the dark brown sling supports show visible aging and use. Knoll’s 1975 letter indicates that touch-up paint was supplied to the owner, although it is not known whether or where it was applied (the paint is not included).
Both chairs appear complete and remain compelling examples of Richard Schultz’s enduring design. They are best suited to a collector who appreciates original documented condition or as candidates for professional restoration.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. Sold together as a pair.
