An exceptional late 18th-century French Provincial buffet à deux corps, dating to approximately 1770–1790, with the graceful proportions and exuberant … Read more An exceptional late 18th-century French Provincial buffet à deux corps, dating to approximately 1770–1790, with the graceful proportions and exuberant hand-carved decoration associated with the lingering Louis XV tradition. Constructed as a traditional two-part cupboard, the piece is crowned by a beautifully shaped chapeau de gendarme cornice, centered by a deeply carved medallion depicting a basket overflowing with flowers. The motif continues throughout the cabinet, with hand-carved floral sprays, scrolling foliage, shaped moldings, and wonderfully fluid contours decorating both the upper and lower doors.

The upper cabinet features two shaped doors with later gathered fabric panels behind wirework, lending the piece a softer, more decorative quality while still allowing it to function beautifully for display or concealed storage. Below, a pair of paneled doors opens to generous shelving. Particularly appealing are the scalloped lower apron, short cabriole-form feet, warm old surface, visible pegged construction, and centuries of irregularities and wear that give the cabinet its unmistakable character. Decorative brass escutcheons and tasseled keys provide an elegant finishing detail. The interior fabric appears to be a later addition, allowing the piece to function beautifully today as a linen press, pantry cupboard, bookcase, or statement storage cabinet. See less
