The front is painted with a … Read more A striking 19th-century American hand-painted pine sea chest featuring a wonderfully graphic maritime scene. The front is painted with a three-masted sailing ship beneath scrolling signal banners and inscribed “Ship John Spear of Rockland, Maine – Maiden Voyage.”

The chest retains its deep green-blue painted surface, with beautifully aged wear and patina throughout. Constructed of pine with a hinged lid, iron strap hinges and traditional rope carrying handles at the sides. The interior remains largely unpainted, revealing the warm, aged pine beneath.

Particularly appealing for its combination of American maritime history and folk-art decoration, the chest has an unusually strong decorative presence. The naturally distressed surface, hand-painted ship and nautical imagery give it the character of a piece that has been used and treasured for generations.
