An elegant Louis XVI period carved giltwood mirror, France, late 18th century, retaining a beautifully aged surface and considerable period character. The shaped frame is richly carved with delicate beaded and foliate moldings, surmounted by an openwork crest of sculpted roses, leafy branches, and a tied ribbon bow centered by a small cartouche.
The architectural frame features an arched crest with distinctive stepped shoulders and curved corner blocks, while a carved foliate flourish accents the lower edge. The warm, time-softened gilding displays attractive variations in tone and areas of wear consistent with age.
The antique mirror plate is heavily foxed and naturally distressed, giving the piece an especially atmospheric appearance and underscoring its considerable age. Wear, losses, old repairs and age-related imperfections are present throughout and contribute to the mirror's authentic character.
A wonderfully decorative example of late 18th-century French Neoclassical design, equally compelling in a traditional interior or juxtaposed with contemporary furnishings.
