A striking late-19th-century painted pine linen press or armoire, attributed to England, circa 1870–1890. The tall, architectural two-part case is distinguished by unusual hand-painted geometric decoration and exceptionally handsome proportions.
A substantial molded cornice crowns a pair of tall paneled cupboard doors opening to a spacious shelved interior. Below, two short drawers over two full-width drawers provide generous additional storage. At 88 inches tall and only 49 inches wide, the piece has an impressive vertical presence while maintaining a relatively compact footprint.
The most distinctive feature is the hand-painted decoration found across the cupboard doors and drawer fronts. Chocolate-brown geometric borders with fine pale highlights create the illusion of contrasting stringing, inlay and architectural molding—a subtle trompe-l’œil effect that gives the restrained pine case unusual graphic character. The stepped-corner motif is repeated throughout the facade.
The piece retains numerous period construction and decorative elements, including surviving hand-cut dovetail joinery, paneled doors, keyholes, turned wood pulls, a substantial molded cornice and bracket feet. The pine displays beautiful variations in grain, tone, knots and surface, particularly across the drawer fronts.
As expected of a functional antique of this age, the linen press has undergone restoration and repair during its lifetime. Portions of the drawer boxes, interior and structural construction have been repaired and/or replaced with later pine while retaining the antique case, decorative facade and substantial period material. These interventions have allowed the piece to remain a highly functional storage cabinet while preserving its distinctive historic character.
With its pale timeworn pine, graphic painted decoration and commanding scale, this would be particularly striking in an English Country, traditional or collected interior. Equally useful as a bedroom wardrobe or linen press, it could also provide beautiful concealed storage in a living room, entry hall or upstairs landing.

The piece retains substantial antique pine construction and decorative elements but has undergone restoration during its lifetime, including replacement and/or reconstruction of portions of the drawer boxes, interior and structural components with later pine. Both antique and later materials are visible in the construction. The hand-painted geometric decoration exhibits expected wear, fading and small areas of loss. Pine surfaces show variations in tone and grain along with age-related scratches, marks, small losses, separations, wear and other irregularities. Turned wood pulls and hardware vary in age, color and condition and may include later replacements. Keyholes remain present; no representation is made as to the originality of individual hardware components. Surviving period drawer construction includes hand-cut dovetail joinery, while other drawer components show later repair or replacement. Interior surfaces and shelving exhibit variations associated with both age and restoration. Please review all photographs closely as they form an important part of the condition description. The visible wear, historic repairs, later alterations and variations in surface are consistent with the age and history of the piece. less
