Geraniums are such a familiar garden plant—the rounded leaves, mounds of flowers, and the occasional stem reaching beyond the rest of the plant all make them instantly recognizable.

Here, the geranium is loose and abundant, spilling over a planter that is intentionally only suggested. The soft form of the terra cotta pot gives the impression of a traditional garden pot without defining every edge. Your eye fills in what isn't there.

Flowers are that perfect pale blush pink geranium in contrat to deep green leafs, feels fresh and slightly unexpected. The hand-drawn lines and soft spray-painted areas give the familiar subject a more graphic, contemporary quality.

It is a modern garden painting, but one that still has the familiarity of a geranium sitting on a terrace, porch, or garden step all summer long.

Susan Havens is a New Orleans–based artist who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. With over 27 years of experience as a graphic designer, art director, and creative director, her work reflects a refined understanding of composition, color, and visual storytelling.
Her artwork is held in private collections and has been placed in residences, private clubs, and hospitality environments by interior designers, as well as featured at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans. See less
