A handsome 19th-century French walnut buffet, circa 1840–1860, with beautifully figured paneled doors and a substantial dark gray marble top. The restrained design has a particularly clean, architectural quality, making it easy to incorporate into both traditional and more contemporary interiors.
The rectangular marble top has softly rounded front corners and attractive natural veining. Below is a wide frieze drawer over a pair of book-matched, figured walnut doors, opening to generous interior storage. The case is raised on small turned front feet.
The warm walnut has developed a lovely mellow patina that contrasts beautifully with the cool gray marble. The paneled sides and simple moldings are characteristic of the understated elegance of French Louis Philippe furniture.
A versatile piece that would work beautifully as a buffet or sideboard in a dining room, a cabinet in a living room, or as a substantial console beneath artwork or a mirror.
