A striking mid-20th-century, circa 1940s–1960s set of ten dining chairs by the Grand Ledge Chair Company of Grand Ledge, Michigan.
The chairs feature an elegant Chinoiserie-inspired design with black lacquered wood frames accented by gilt and hand-painted floral and foliate decoration. Gracefully shaped backs center on decorative vase-form splats, while cabriole front legs, slender rear legs and stretcher bases complete their distinctive silhouettes.
Hand-painted decoration appears throughout the chairs, including floral motifs along the splats, seat rails and legs, with gilt detailing highlighting the architectural lines of the frames. Decades of use have given the black lacquer and painted decoration a wonderfully timeworn appearance, with areas of fading, rubbing and finish loss contributing to the authentic aged character of the set.
Particularly noteworthy is the large set of ten, providing seating for a substantial dining table and offering a configuration considerably harder to find than smaller sets of vintage dining chairs.
The chairs remain structurally very solid and sturdy and are being offered in their current vintage condition rather than refinished, preserving the naturally developed patina of the lacquer and hand-painted surfaces.
The seats currently feature two different upholstery treatments: a red patterned fabric and a lighter multicolor patterned fabric, as shown in the photographs. They can be enjoyed in their present eclectic state or provide an excellent opportunity for a designer or new owner to reupholster all ten in a coordinating fabric.
An original Grand Ledge Chair Company, Grand Ledge, Michigan label is present.

The original-style black lacquered surfaces show substantial age-related character, including fading, rubbing, scratches, scuffs and areas of finish and decorative paint loss. The gilt and hand-painted decoration varies in intensity from chair to chair, with some areas retaining more decoration than others. These variations and losses are consistent with decades of use and contribute to the attractive, naturally aged patina of the set. The chairs have intentionally not been refinished or cosmetically restored. The upholstery varies among the chairs and shows age and previous use. Two different fabrics are currently present, as photographed. A future owner may choose to reupholster the set for a fully coordinated appearance. Please review all photographs closely, as they are an important part of the condition description. Our collection features distinctive vintage furnishings selected for their character, craftsmanship, and decorative appeal. As authentic vintage pieces, they may exhibit variations in finish, patina, fading, surface wear, minor imperfections, and other signs of a previous life. We consider these characteristics part of the individuality and history that make vintage furniture so appealing. Photographs are provided as an important part of the condition description and we encourage their careful review. Our goal is to offer thoughtfully selected vintage furnishings that bring personality, history, and enduring style to today’s interiors. A single image has been digitally staged to showcase potential placement and styling. The remaining photographs provide the most accurate representation of the piece’s condition, finish, and overall character. less
