A single real feather — the seed of the composition, not a finishing touch. Hilary Inglis painted outward from it each time, letting the feather set the terms. Here, a striped feather rests against a warm gold ground, bordered by hand-worked chevron stripes in teal, rust, coral, and burnt orange.
This piece completes the first, smallest release from Hilary Inglis's estate — larger studio works will follow later.
Hilary Inglis was a maker in the fullest sense — painter, photographer, silversmith, restorer, collector. With her husband Ian, she ran a well-known Edinburgh antique market, restoring antiques by hand and understanding objects from the inside out. That tactile intelligence shaped everything she made. The couple later relocated to Spain's Costa Blanca, where Hilary continued painting and exhibiting, including at DADA Marquetería Galería in Xàbia (Jávea), Alicante.
Hilary Inglis made only a small, finite number of these feather works, each one unique. The first two pieces from this exact series are listed separately in this shop; all three are available together as the complete "Birds of a Feather" collection at a special set price. Message me for details.
Presented in its original distressed silver frame with soft red-coral mat, ready to hang.
Provenance: From the estate of Hilary Inglis, Costa Blanca, Spain. Exhibited at DADA Marquetería Galería, Xàbia (Jávea), Alicante, 03730. Created during her later working period on the Costa Blanca, circa 2000s — exact date undocumented but consistent with her studio years in this period.
