Da Fonseca Ilić paints the scrubby coastal greenery in loose, confident strokes of sage and olive, leaving the figures rendered simply, from behind, so the viewer follows their path rather than their faces.

Javiera da Fonseca Ilić is a Chilean painter born in Santiago in 1982, now based in Mexico. She studied Visual Arts at the Universidad de Chile from 2000 to 2005, specializing in painting, and later studied art appreciation under Eugenio Dittborn. Working in oil, acrylic, and spray on canvas, she builds landscapes charged with saturated, sometimes neon color drawn from sunsets, tropical foliage, and architecture.

Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across Chile, Mexico, the United States, and Canada, including a solo show titled Aura at Back Gallery Project in Vancouver, and fairs such as Art Market San Francisco and Art on Paper New York, most recently the San Francisco Art Fair in 2026. Da Fonseca Ilić treats each canvas as a threshold between the natural and the built world, using color to hold a scene suspended in time. See less
