- This desk was brought here to the United States through Scandinavia. From everything I have been able to thus far … moreThis desk was brought here to the United States through Scandinavia. From everything I have been able to thus far learn about this piece, it was very likely built between 1880 and 1920 in the UK, or more specifically in France or Belgium. The condition is good though I have noticed a few cracks in the wood. I don’t know enough about this piece to know whether the cracks were already in the wood at the time the desk was first built, that is if they were formed by nature. This desk is solid wood. It took three muscular men to move the desk after I purchased it, and that was only possible after first removing the drawers. Each door has a lock on it, and it comes with two original keys. I have noticed that the door on the right has a hard time staying closed unless it is locked. There are no hand pulls to open the drawers. To open each drawer, I have to get my fingernail under the locking mechanism and pull the drawer out or I have to insert one of the keys into the slot and open the drawer by pulling on the key. An antique site that I visited valued this desk to be worth between $1,200 and $3,500. The pendulum was midway between common and very rare. less
