Horner & Co. Both pieces are crafted in richly figured bird’s-eye maple with beautifully executed faux bamboo detailing throughout.

The secretary embodies the refined Anglo-Japanese influence that defined the American Aesthetic Movement during the late Victorian period. Its fold-down writing surface retains the original leather insert and opens to reveal an elegantly appointed interior with pigeonholes, divided compartments, drawers, and enclosed storage behind twin cabinet doors.

The upper gallery is crowned with delicate turned spindles and finials, creating an architectural silhouette that is both functional and decorative. Rich bird’s-eye maple veneers display exceptional figure throughout, complemented by expertly turned faux bamboo elements that showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship associated with Horner’s finest productions.

The matching chair continues the same faux bamboo design and warm bird’s-eye maple finish and retains its original hand-caned seat. The survival of the coordinating chair alongside the secretary makes this offering especially uncommon, as companion chairs are frequently separated or lost over time.

The secretary and chair were acquired together as part of a remarkable surviving partial bedroom suite that remained together for generations. The coordinating mirror and twin bed are offered separately.

Condition

Very good antique condition consistent with approximately 135–140 years of age and over a century of careful use. The secretary desk and matching chair retain their original finish with a beautiful age-related patina throughout, along with expected wear, light surface marks, finish variation, and minor imperfections consistent with authentic antique furniture.

The original hand-caned chair seat remains intact, and the secretary retains its original leather writing surface, which exhibits age-appropriate wear that enhances its authenticity and character. Minor areas of missing decorative trim are present, as shown in the photographs.
