A rare Saint Clément majolica absinthe pitcher formed as a Marabou stork, circa 1900.
Hand-glazed in soft whites, sky blue and warm amber, she stands on a bed of tropical greenery, her great beak tilted forward — the spout. Her handle, a graceful curve of sage green. Everything about her is considered, sculptural, alive.
Saint Clément, founded in 1758, produced some of the most inventive zoomorphic pieces in French faïence history. This Marabou is among their most sought-after models — referenced in Bottero's definitive book on French barbotine pitchers.
