This impressive antique engraving, titled "Washington and His Family," was engraved by the noted American engraver William Sartain and published by Bradley & Co. of Philadelphia in 1858. Depicting George Washington surrounded by members of his household, the composition became one of the most recognizable patriotic images of the 19th century, celebrating the legacy of America's first president during a period of growing national pride. Housed in an ornate period gilt frame, it makes a striking display piece for a library, study, or any traditional American interior.
Expertly engraved with remarkable attention to detail, the print captures the refined expressions, architectural setting, and rich tonal contrasts that made this image so enduring. The substantial period frame features deeply molded foliate and floral ornamentation with a warm gilt finish that beautifully complements the historic subject matter. Together, the engraving and its original style frame create an impressive presentation that is both historically significant and highly decorative.
The engraving is in nice antique condition, retaining strong detail with expected age toning, scattered foxing, and areas of water staining in the margins consistent with its age. The period gilt frame is also in nice antique condition with noticeable age-related wear, including losses to the gesso and gilding, shrinkage cracks, and areas of exposed composition, particularly along the lower rail and at the corners. These honest signs of age are typical of a well-preserved 19th-century frame and contribute to the authenticity and character of the piece. It remains a beautiful and display-ready example. 28h x 33w x 2d
