An exceptional original oil on canvas by listed Twin Cities artist Phyllis Wesley, retaining its original Minneapolis Institute of Arts exhibition label from the prestigious 20th Annual Exhibition of Twin City Artists, 1934.
The reverse bears the original handwritten exhibition label identifying the artist as Phyllis Wesley, the title “Study in Black and Ochre,” and the exhibition date of 1934, providing wonderful documented provenance. The painting is presented in what appears to be its original vintage wood frame, complementing the artwork’s authentic period character.
Executed in warm earth tones with expressive brushwork, the composition has a timeless modernist quality that works beautifully in both traditional and contemporary interiors. The original tacked canvas construction further supports its early 20th-century origin.
A rare opportunity to acquire an exhibited work with documented museum exhibition history from one of Minneapolis’ important annual juried exhibitions.

The painted surface is in good vintage condition with expected age-related wear. A subtle stretcher bar impression is visible in portions of the canvas, most noticeable under certain lighting angles. This is a common characteristic of older stretched canvases and does not appear to affect the structural integrity or display of the artwork. The frame shows light wear consistent with age. less
