The Old Master Paintings Dog Portraits category features an oil painting on canvas depicting a hunting dog,
executed with great pictorial sensitivity and naturalistic attention. It is a pointing dog (chiens d'arrêt), probably a Pointer
or French Pointer. 19th century.
The animal is depicted in profile, with an alert and slightly melancholic gaze, against a neutral, bright background that enhances
its head and expression. The brushstroke is soft and controlled, typical of late-19th-century French figurative painting.
This is a pleasant portrait of a hunting dog from the late-19th century.
The old master painting is signed at the bottom left by Théodore Lévigne, a French painter known for landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits.
Théodore Lévigne (1848-1912) was born in Noirétable, a small town in the Massif Central region of France.
His family soon moved to Lyon, to the Saint-Jean neighborhood, where young Lévigne grew up and demonstrated an early passion
for drawing and painting. Around 1860, at the age of about 12, he entered the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, where
he studied until 1862. At the age of 15, he won the Laurier d'Or, the highest distinction of the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, for a work entitled Un portrait.
Lévigne then moved to Paris, where he furthered his academic studies under the guidance of Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme,
two of the most important masters of the time.
Throughout his career, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and other public exhibitions.
Some of this painter's works are held in museums: Chambery, Lyon, Nice, and others.
The work features an original gilded frame, contemporary with the 19th-century painting.
The antique painting and its frame have been meticulously and professionally restored.
