The composition features two figures: a man in red and green holding a pewter tankard, and an old peasant wearing a brown hat, leaning on his left elbow, both holding white clay pipes. The chiaroscuro treatment against a warm brown background is characteristic of this Flemish and Dutch painting style, highly prized in the 17th and 18th centuries and continued in the production of the second half of the 19th century (circa 1850-1880).

The period frame in giltwood with parallel fluting and carved acanthus motifs at the corners is attributable to the Restoration/Louis-Philippe style (circa 1830-1860). Both the canvas and frame have been restored. Age-related cracks are visible on the canvas.
