Shaped signs like this were a mainstay of early 20th-century cobblers-bold silhouettes meant to catch the eye from the street and communicate a shop's specialty instantly, long before neon and mass-produced signage dominated American commercial districts. The board retains a wonderful period presence: hand-rendered typography, layered advertising claims ("Satisfaction Guaranteed," "No Wait"), and numerals likely corresponding to the shop's street address (1040).
