Painted with glazes - translucent layers of paint. This technique was used to enhance the color values, and allowed for greater precision in painting details. The presented landscape was painted against a dark background, on which the artist applied successive layers of glaze with lighter tones and details, including a staffage depicting animals and people.

The landscape shows the mountainous landscape in the afternoon, bathed in warm, golden light. The foreground shows a meadow, paths and a bridge leading to the city hidden at the foot of the mountains, visible in the background. The main topic is therefore the idyllic theme of suburban life. Cows grazing - on the left, animals led over the bridge in the center and travelers leaving the city - on the right. It is worth paying attention to the lightly painted trees in the right part of the canvas with gentle brush strokes. The whole is kept in warm, golden-brown colors with small accents of dark green and blue.

The presented painting is part of the tradition of classical landscape painting, which flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was especially popular in today's Netherlands and Flanders, where landscape painting was born and developed more rapidly. One of the greatest creators of this trend was Claude Lorraine. A native of France, operating in Rome, he combined the best features of French and Italian painting with the northern landscape school, achieving mastery thanks to which he is still counted among the great masters today.

The work of Claude Lorraine is characterized by a great, thoughtful composition, excellent chiaroscuro and colors. He often included staffage in his landscapes - with pastoral and mythological scenes. The painted landscapes were not realistic in the present sense of the word - they were composed from a few selected views, fusing them into an ideal landscape.
