A hand-thrown porcelain lipped tray, dating to the Chinese Republic Period (1912–1949), is beautifully decorated in vibrant overglaze enamels with the traditional "Butterfly and Melon" (Gua Die Mian Mian / 瓜迭绵绵) motif.
The finely executed design features colorful butterflies fluttering among twisting melon vines, blossoms, leaves, and gourds. The hand-painted decoration displays subtle shading, confident brushwork, and excellent attention to detail, reflecting the high-quality craftsmanship of the period.
In Chinese culture, the butterfly and melon motif is an auspicious symbol representing an unbroken family lineage, abundant prosperity, fertility, and longevity. This timeless design has long been favored for its elegant composition and meaningful symbolism, making it especially desirable among collectors of Republic Period Chinese porcelain.
The back is unglazed and shows the potter's wheel marks. The white glaze feels thick and soft. The tray probably originates from Jingdezhen, a renowned center for porcelain production in China.
