Eclectic Venetian Late Baroque Mirror
Period: 19th Century (1800s)
Cultural Area: Veneto / Northern Italy
Materials: Carved wood, gilded with gold leaf (over gesso and Armenian bole) and mercury for the mirrors.
General and Typological Analysis
Freestanding or wall-mounted mirror, created during the 19th century in the eclectic Neo-Rococo (or Venetian Late Baroque) style, emulating the famous 18th-century Venetian examples.
The work is distinguished by the scenographic richness of its architectural structure, characterized by a rectangular main frame enriched by a sumptuous openwork cornice and a large matching apron.
Decorative Details and Carving
The Cyma (Grooved Top): The upper crown is a veritable triumph of curlicue volutes, scrolls, and shell motifs (rocaille). At the center, it houses a second, smaller profiled panel, set like a gem, reflecting the typically Venetian style.
The Inner Frame: The perimeter frame features a raised band carved with small floral and plant motifs, bordered both inside and out by twisted moldings and cords. The upper corners feature two spectacular, everted lateral ears with large volutes, terminating in an acanthus leaf and a milled shell motif.
The Lower Apron: The base mirrors the richness of the gable with a balanced interplay of counter-shaped volutes centered on a hanging palmette element, lending momentum and visual stability to the entire structure.
Technical and Conservation Notes
Back and Structure (19th-Century Construction): Examination of the back confirms the 19th-century dating. The supporting structure shows solid construction with closing slats cut with a mechanical/semi-manual saw and the use of stops and crosspieces applied to support the complex carving framework.
Carving: Carved in high relief in solid wood with evident gouging on the back and burin finish on the front surfaces.
Gilding and Patina: Gold leaf gilding applied on a red/brown bole (visible in the areas of natural wear on the lower edge), which provides a pleasant period patina and enhances the three-dimensionality of the volumes.
