Approx. 11 3/4" High x 28 1/2" Wide x 14 1/2" Deep.

Exceptional mid to late 19th century European Alpine or Basque/Pyrenean folk art baby cradle.

This piece showcases stunning, authentic chip carving techniques across all primary panels, presenting a rich narrative of symbolic protections.

Built using traditional mortise and tenon construction anchored by wooden joinery pegs, the wood has developed a warm, dark, naturally aged patina over more than a century of preservation.

Iconography and Motifs:

* Headboard: Features a prominent Catholic IHS Christogram flanked by a central Latin cross and three lower crucifixion nails. The panel finishes with a classic crowned scalloped upper edge.

* Footboard: Carved with a large, swirling Sun Wheel lauburu rosette variant bordered by clean geometric triangle framing, representing the cycle of life.

* Side Panel A: Showcases a custom, serif style family monogram reading I C G housed in concentric framing, paired courtship birds, and a central Tree of Life flanked by a guardian dove.

* Side Panel B: Features a matched wildlife set of an Alpine Stag buck with detailed antlers and a companion doe, along with a Sacred Heart topped by a cross and a separate heart pierced by an arrow.

* Framing Details: Medallions alternate between highly textured sawtooth edges and rope twist borders. Side rails feature three matching stabilizer holes on each side.

Excellent antique condition. Structurally strong and stable with a beautiful, deep, untouched original finish. The lower rockers display faint, historic pinhole insect flight holes that are entirely inactive, adding authentic rustic character common to continental country furniture of this era. Normal wear from use and age.
