Commissioned by Dayton's and produced by the renowned Tyler Graphics Ltd., the bag was created as commemorative exhibition ephemera for the opening celebration rather than as ordinary retail packaging. Gallery references describe it as a special edition produced specifically for the event, and surviving examples have become increasingly sought after by collectors of Frank Stella, museum ephemera, and twentieth-century graphic design.

This particular example comes from the estate of the longtime buyer for the Walker Art Center gift shop. According to the original owner's family, it was retained from that period, providing an exceptional connection to the institution for which it was originally created.

The bag features two different offset lithographic compositions by Frank Stella, one on each side, with printed copyright and artist attribution dating to 1984. The colors remain exceptionally vibrant, making it a striking display piece whether exhibited flat, framed, or displayed in an acrylic museum-style case.

Condition is very good for an ephemeral paper object of this age. It retains its original twisted paper handles and displays beautifully. Age-related creasing is present throughout, along with several small edge tears and a minor seam separation, all of which are shown in the accompanying photographs. No restoration has been observed.

This is an outstanding example of artist-designed exhibition ephemera that bridges contemporary art, institutional history, and graphic design. Few objects so elegantly capture the collaboration between Frank Stella, Tyler Graphics, Dayton's, and one of America's most influential contemporary art museums. See less
