Designed in 1974 by the renowned Venetian design duo Afra and Tobia Scarpa for Molteni & C, the Monk chair (Model 121) is one of the most emblematic masterpieces of avant-garde Italian design of the 1970s. A piece of furniture that overturns the classic idea of a dining chair, transforming it into a minimalist and striking architectural sculpture.
The name itself, Monk, evokes an almost monastic simplicity, a beauty stripped of any superfluous decoration where the value lies entirely in the formal purity and honesty of the materials.
The frame bears the unmistakable signature of Tobia Scarpa's style. Crafted from solid wood, it is composed of sturdy and well-defined rectangular-section elements. The exposed joints and bolts on the legs do not conceal the construction, but become its main distinctive aesthetic feature.
The seat and backrest are made from a single double sheet of thick, rigid leather, crafted with visible hand-stitched stitching on the back. The leather is not simply a covering, but a self-sufficient structural element that attaches directly to the wooden uprights, suspending the body in a firm yet comfortable grip.
What makes the Monk Chair unique is the perfect balance between the visual solidity of solid wood—inspired by Brutalist style—and the tactile lightness of stretched leather. Over time, the leather acquires a natural patina that enriches its personality, telling the story of the piece without sacrificing its functionality.
The Monk Chair is more than just a dining chair: it is a perfect synthesis of cabinetmaking expertise, formal rationalism, and the tailoring of leather.
Recognized for its structural boldness, the Monk Chair is today one of the most sought-after vintage pieces by collectors and interior designers around the world. Its stage presence manages to blend with rare elegance into both modern and minimalist spaces, as well as vintage or industrial settings.
Very good conditions; some chairs may have some obvious signs of age and use, but in general they had been kept in very good condition. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
