This rare set of four lp 276 lamps by carlo nason for mazzega demonstrates the sculptural possibilities of murano glass, where each element contributes to a larger architectural composition yet retains its individuality. Arranged together or installed separately, the design offers remarkable freedom in presentation.
design
designed during the 1970s, the lp 276 reflects carlo nason’s ongoing fascination with modular lighting and the expressive qualities of hand-worked murano glass. Rather than relying on decoration, nason allowed the material itself to become the defining feature. Thick clear crystal glass is fused with a flowing band of white graniglia (white sand), creating a soft, cloud-like form suspended within the transparent body of each shade. The result is a subtle dialogue between opacity and clarity that changes as the lamps are viewed from different angles.
this set consists of four individual lamps that together create a sculptural wall or ceiling installation. The larger curved glass elements interlock visually with the smaller companion shades, producing a composition that feels almost architectural. Once illuminated, the white glass softly diffuses the light, while the polished crystal edges remain transparent, adding depth and gentle reflections across the surrounding wall or ceiling. Each hand-formed glass element carries slight variations, reminding us of its murano craftsmanship. Mounted individually, the lamps become understated architectural lights; combined, they form an abstract composition that blurs the boundary between lighting and sculpture.
carlo nason belonged to one of murano's historic glassmaking families and became known for introducing clean geometric forms into venetian lighting during the late twentieth century. His work for mazzega combined traditional glassmaking techniques with modern architectural thinking, resulting in lighting that remains highly relevant in contemporary interiors.
whether installed as a symmetrical group, arranged in a custom composition, or used individually throughout an interior, these lp 276 lamps offer exceptional versatility. Their restrained palette and sculptural character allow them to complement both modernist and contemporary spaces while remaining unmistakably italian in origin.
