On the Design:

This Antique Khamseh rug presents one of the most recognizable layouts in tribal weaving: an allover field of stylized murgh, or bird motifs, arranged in rhythmic horizontal rows across a deep midnight ground. Rather than centering the layout around a medallion, the design celebrates repetition, allowing each angular bird to contribute to a richly animated surface. Small geometric devices fill the spaces between the motifs, lending texture and visual density while preserving the remarkable balance that distinguishes Khamseh weaving. The stepped ivory corner spandrels further define the field, creating a subtle architectural framework that draws the eye inward.

The palette reflects the enduring character of late nineteenth-century tribal craftsmanship, combining saturated brick red, indigo, sky blue, ivory, camel, walnut brown, and restrained accents of olive. The principal border, populated with angular floral and geometric devices, provides a bold counterpoint to the lively movement of the field while reinforcing the rug's strong sense of structure. Together, the symbolic bird motifs and vibrant tribal color palette embody the expressive vocabulary that has made Antique Khamseh rugs among the most distinctive and enduring traditions within Persian nomadic weaving.
