The precision, patience, and countless hours required to create this tabletop are immediately apparent, making it as much a work of folk art as it is a functional table.

According to the family from whom I acquired the piece, the tabletop was handcrafted over many years by an inmate serving a life sentence. While I cannot independently document that history, it has remained part of the family’s provenance for decades and adds another fascinating layer to an already remarkable piece.

The tabletop is mounted on a pedestal base and presents beautifully. A small section of the matchstick inlay has come loose over time along with minor edge losses consistent with age. These areas are shown in the photographs. The table remains solid and structurally sound and could either be enjoyed exactly as it is or thoughtfully conserved by someone who appreciates exceptional handcrafted work.
