This listing is for a Medieval period French ceiling tile ca. 1300s - 1400's (14th - 15th century) from the Auvergne region in the French Alps. Made of terracotta, these were intended to decorate ceiling rafters in medieval buildings.
Design:
This one features a man wearing a Phyrigan cap or perhaps a scaled acorn cupule with foliage behind, possibly reflecting a figure from French folklore or myth. Most ofnthese tiles feature the heads of nobles or botanical and geometric motifs. This one, with its whimsical design, is much more rare. A real collector's treat. Approx 7.25"h x 6"w x 0.75" d
Condition:
This example is in excellent condition overall. No significant damage, cracks, or repairs have been made. It is essentially intact minus a couple of small nicks. Pictures do the talking here.
