Antique Papier Peint Garden Scene in a Water-Gilded Wood Frame
At the center of this frame is a hand-colored papier peint cutout: a young girl stands in a garden wearing a ribbon-tied bonnet, a white blouse with full puffed sleeves, a rose-pink bodice, and a cream apron-skirt trimmed in pink ribbon, gathered up in one hand; she's barefoot. Her other arm carries a woven basket overflowing with pink and white roses, with a rustic wood lattice fence and flowering shrubs behind her, all in a soft, muted palette of sage green, tan, and dusty pink. The composition recalls François Boucher's "La Petite Jardinière" (The Little Gardener), a genuine documented 18th-century work known as both a painting and a period engraving .
The oval frame itself is carved from wood, prepared with gesso, and finished in water gilding, with a beaded inner border, leaf-tip carving, and a crest of ribbon bow, rose blossoms, and leaves at the top.
Style is consistent with French Napoleon III to Belle Époque carved giltwood frames, roughly 1870s-1900s .
Condition is as-found. Raised areas of the carving show gilt loss with the gesso/wood ground visible underneath, the paper backing board is heavily stained with areas of loss exposing the wood support, and the papier peint print has a visible crease across its upper portion.
Measurements: frame 20 x 15 in overall; papier peint cutout 14 x 11 in.
