1950’s Atomic Era large Spider frame 3 tier Coffee / Cocktail table. Top tier measures 24” across, mid tier 20” … Read more 1950’s Atomic Era large Spider frame 3 tier Coffee / Cocktail table. Top tier measures 24” across, mid tier 20” & lowest tier 16”. Tables highest tier is set at 30 inches. Veneer wood (which was the material of choice for tier tables to keep weight & the cost down) & hollow Iron or Steel square leg painted black & capped off with a brass colored sphere, both often used in collaboration by Designers to create thin, strong, and light furniture that felt open and modern. Legs are in good condition, with paint wearing off in places, scuffs & scratches consistent with its age. All 3 of the tiers are mainly intact, with some of the finish wearing off. There are several fairly noticeable (but not in any case major) chips in the Veneer, on the underside near the edge, which is consistent with top of the table but those chips were filled by someone, however the filler has been wearing down some since then, see Pics (I mainly refer to the middle 20 inch tier) . Rest of the Veneer is intact & without any warping on neither top, bottom or the rim of either of the wooden tiers & Veneer still look very much like Oak, just worn down some. Im trying to depict everything as thorough as I can but I’m only allowed to post 12 Images, so utilize your zoom feature & feel free to ask for more pics. It’s an overall solid distressed / time-worn table with nothing loose or flimsy, no major problems . Well balanced & sturdy .

Some info about this particular Spider frame style of tables in regard to all other Atomic Era (1950’s) tier tables. Most Atomic Era tier tables were constructed using straight vertical wood dowels or stacked step-back frames. The Spider leg construction, where a single focal hub serves as the nexus for both the downward tripod legs and the upward branching arms, required more complex welding and precise structural engineering to stay balanced, especially in the uncommon all-round configuration.

Furthermore, most mid-century multi-tier tables with architectural Spider base, were smaller accent pieces or plant stands, where the largest tier rarely exceeded 12 to 14 inches, being a true Spider frame nexus built with just the top tier measuring 24” across (plus two additional branching rounds) makes this a full sized Coffee or Cocktail table, rather than just a corner accent piece & finding one nowadays is highly unlikely.

Please Note: The item is mid-Century Vintage & has been used, it shows signs of wear consistent with its age. There are noticeable surface scratches & scuffs, small indentations, general finish wear, small chips in the Veneer, near the edge. It aged gracefully though & is a solid table in distressed / time-warn condition. Before you place a bid/buy please carefully review the Photos as they are a vital part of the description.
