This beautifully hand-carved oak wall plaque depicts what appears to be a Renaissance Revival interpretation of a classical Roman mythological scene. Executed in deep relief, the composition features enthroned deities believed to represent Jupiter (Zeus) and Juno (Hera), accompanied by Neptune (Poseidon) holding his trident and Mercury (Hermes) serving as the divine messenger. Additional symbolic figures, including a griffin and ram, complete the richly detailed composition.
Adding to the plaque’s historical appeal is the carved Latin inscription running along the lower border. The inscription is generally read as:
“Votum solutum Iovi ac Junoni… sedentibus in throno Neptuno et Mercurio…”
which has been translated as approximately:
“A vow fulfilled to Jupiter and Juno, seated upon their throne, with Neptune and Mercury standing nearby as Jupiter’s messenger announces.”
Rather than being an original Renaissance carving, this plaque appears to be a well-executed 20th-century Renaissance Revival work inspired by historic European architectural reliefs celebrating Greco-Roman mythology.
The carving possesses exceptional depth, warm oak patina, and crisp hand-carved detail that become more dramatic as light moves across the surface. It is equally suited to a library, study, wine cellar, classical interior, or European-inspired home.
An unusual decorative object that combines classical mythology, Latin epigraphy, and traditional European craftsmanship.
