An exceptionally rare antique Jean Pouyat Limoges (J.P.L.) porcelain veilleuse (tea warmer) set, beautifully hand painted in an elegant Japonisme style and dating to the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
This complete three-piece set includes the original pierced warmer, matching teapot, and original lid. The decoration is extraordinary, depicting scholars gathered around a glowing fire amid snowy mountains with hanging lanterns, birds in flight, and delicate landscape details. The upper teapot features cranes flying through a softly shaded lavender sky over raised fish-scale enameling, finished with rich matte gold accents.
The quality of the hand painting is remarkable, with exceptional detail and depth throughout. In person the glaze possesses a subtle luminous, almost iridescent quality that photographs struggle to capture.
After extensive research, I located only one other example of this exact model and decoration. That example was missing both its lid and much of its spout, making complete examples like this exceptionally difficult to find.
The underside bears the green J.P.L. factory mark for Jean Pouyat Limoges along with traces of the red France overglaze mark.
Condition is very good antique condition with only minor wear consistent with age. There is a small chip to the porcelain leaf finial on the lid and a small area of gilt wear beneath the teapot handle. Otherwise the porcelain shows vibrant hand-painted decoration and strong original gilding.
An outstanding example of antique French Limoges porcelain that combines exceptional artistry with an uncommon form, making it equally suited for a serious porcelain collection or sophisticated interior display.
