Built as a faithful Colonial Revival reproduction of original 19th-century Lambert Hitchcock designs, this piece beautifully marries historic form with timeless artistry.
The chair features an ebonized hardwood frame adorned with intricate, hand-painted gilt stenciling across the top crest rail and back splats. The artwork showcases a traditional horn-of-plenty fruit and floral motif, complemented by delicate geometric linework tracing the turned legs and stiles. The authentic woven cane seat is tightly taut, providing excellent structural integrity and a striking visual texture.
The rear lower seat rail proudly retains the original stamped maker's mark: a beautiful gold stencil reading "Walter Smith" encased in a classic scrollwork border.

The bottoms of the legs are worn and there are little grey paint flecks of unknown origin. The edges have original wear from being pushed back to the table for many years. Excellent antique condition with character-rich wear consistent with age and careful historical use. The frame remains tight and sturdy. The hand-painted stenciling displays minor, expected paint loss and a beautifully aged patina that enhances its authentic antique character. The cane seat is fully intact and structurally sound.
