Originating from China circa 1920-1929, the piece features striking Imperial Dragon pictorials in a vibrant polychromatic palette.

On the Design:

Admirers of antique Chinese weaving will appreciate the distinct format and cultural significance of this Ningxia pillar runner, a style traditionally woven to wrap around the wooden columns of Buddhist temples. Set against a deep, rich navy blue background, the design is anchored by a commanding, sinuous Imperial dragon woven in soft cream and yellow hues. A closer look reveals the dragon in pursuit of the flaming pearl of wisdom—a ubiquitous symbol of spiritual energy, power, and immortality in Chinese mythology, visible near the top of the runner. Surrounding the central figure is a classic arrangement of auspicious Ruyi clouds in alternating shades of pale peach, light blue, and warm gold, evoking the celestial realm.

The layout is grounded at the bottom by a traditional rolling wave and mountain motif also known as a Lishui stripe, intricately detailed with diagonal bands of color that represent the cosmic ocean and the earth. Meanwhile, the top features a draped canopy design adorned with hanging tassels, simulating the elaborate silk valances that historically adorned temple interiors.The wool pile beautifully carries the aged, polychromatic tones, boasting the soft, velvety texture and radiant patina that are hallmarks of antique Ningxia weaving.
