This 4x7 vintage Turkish Anatolian runner, handwoven in wool circa 1950–1959, features a striking geometric layout with alternating stepped medallions framing a richly patterned central column. Its naturally aged patina lends depth to a timeless tribal aesthetic.
On the Design:
This vintage Anatolian runner embodies the enduring visual language of mid-century Turkish village weaving, where bold geometry and rhythmic repetition define the layout. A narrow central axis presents a procession of stepped lozenge medallions enclosed within a dark field, creating a strong architectural spine. On either side, larger hooked diamond motifs are arranged in measured succession against an open ivory ground, producing a compelling dialogue between positive and negative space. The crisp angular drawing and balanced symmetry reflect the practical elegance for which Anatolian tribal weaving has long been celebrated.
The palette is equally expressive, pairing warm ivory with saturated crimson, brick red, deep indigo, teal, and muted olive, accented by smaller polychrome details that animate each motif without overwhelming the layout. Multiple geometric guard borders frame the field with precision, reinforcing its structured rhythm while soft age-related wear introduces an appealing patina that speaks to decades of use. The result is a rug that balances graphic clarity with authentic character, making it equally suited to traditional interiors and contemporary spaces seeking a layer of historic craftsmanship and understated warmth. The accompanying book, Henri Samuel Master of the French Interior by Emily Evans Eerdsman, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B233) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
