c. 1930s-1940s; Athol Machine & Foundry Co. - Athol, MA
Double-sided lithographed tin advertising sign promoting Athol vises manufactured by the Athol Machine & Foundry Company of Athol, Massachusetts. The sign features identical advertising panels on each face with bold black and red typography surrounding a detailed illustration of an Athol bench vise in cutaway view. Intended for hardware stores, industrial supply houses, and machinery dealers, signs of this type were suspended or mounted where they could be viewed from either direction, making them effective point-of-sale advertising displays. This example features the company's recognizable elephant motif flanking a cutaway illustration of an Athol vise beneath the slogan, "Strong Where Strength Is Needed," with matching "Athol Vises" graphics on both sides.

The lithographed finish exhibits scratches, scuffs, paint loss, scattered oxidation, and areas of surface staining throughout. Heavy rust and metal loss are present along the edges and corners, with additional corrosion affecting isolated areas on both faces. A noticeable impact chip with associated finish loss is present within the lettering, exposing the underlying metal. Despite the wear, both sides retain strong color, crisp graphics, and excellent visual contrast. less
