The five-piece set … Read more Exceptional 1950s Mexican Modernist pitcher and tumbler set by Alfredo Villasana, designed and handcrafted in Taxco, Mexico. The five-piece set consists of a large water or cocktail pitcher and four matching tumblers, beautifully executed in solid brass with hand-inlaid abalone shell and silver-plated interiors.

The design is particularly striking for its architectural construction. Rows of individually fitted iridescent abalone shell panels encircle each piece and are separated by horizontal brass bands, creating a rhythmic geometric pattern. The natural shell displays remarkable variations of pearl, green, blue, lavender, pink and silver, giving the surfaces an almost jewel-like quality that changes dramatically with the light.

The pitcher features a sculptural flared pouring spout and an elegant elongated handle, itself embellished with abalone shell inlay. Its tall cylindrical form and graphic banded construction give the piece a distinctly Mid-Century Modern Mexican aesthetic while retaining the extraordinary handcraftsmanship for which Taxco decorative arts are celebrated.

A wonderful example of Mexican modernism and Taxco metalwork, this set works beautifully as functional barware but is equally compelling as a decorative object. For interior designers, it would make an exceptional addition to a cocktail bar, drinks cabinet, dining room, library, console, credenza or curated collection of Mexican Modernist decorative arts. The luminous abalone makes the set especially effective in interiors incorporating brass, bronze, parchment, lacquer, stone or richly figured woods.

The pitcher is marked “Taxco / Plateado”, while the tumblers bear Taxco / Villa / Laton hallmarks.

Condition: Vintage condition consistent with age and use. The abalone shell inlay remains intact and presents beautifully. The brass retains an attractive aged patina with scattered surface wear. The silver-plated interiors show mild oxidation, discoloration and wear consistent with age. Please refer to the photographs for additional condition details.
