This 4x7 Scandinavian rug, hand-knotted in wool on wool foundation and dating to circa 1940, reflects an early dialogue between Scandinavian Modernism and Moroccan Berber aesthetics through its bold geometric layout. A very unusual Swedish pile rug with colour and design reminiscent of Beni Ouarain Berber rugs, suggesting that Moroccan carpets were influencing Scandinavian Modern design quite early on.
On the Design:
This exceptional Swedish pile rug stands as an early expression of Scandinavian Modernism's fascination with North African textiles. Long before Berber rugs became a defining influence on twentieth-century interiors, Swedish designers and architects, including Alvar Aalto—recognized the quiet sophistication of Moroccan weaving traditions. Here, an open ivory field is punctuated by evenly spaced black parallel lines that establish a restrained geometric rhythm reminiscent of Beni Ouarain rugs. Rather than relying on ornamentation, the layout celebrates balance, proportion, and the expressive potential of negative space, embodying the understated elegance that became synonymous with Scandinavian design.
The rug's most distinctive feature lies in its elaborately woven flat-weave ends, where bold zigzag motifs in golden ochre, soft sage, ivory, and black provide a striking visual counterpoint to the minimalist field. This deliberate contrast between the plush, shaggy pile and the crisp geometry of the kilim-woven finishes showcases the remarkable technical ingenuity of Swedish women weavers during the mid-century period. The interplay of texture, color, and construction transforms an otherwise restrained layout into a richly tactile work of textile art, illustrating how Scandinavian craftsmanship reinterpreted global influences through its own refined modernist lens. The accompanying book, Henri Samuel Master of the French Interior by Emily Evans Eerdsman, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B233) can be acquired independently through our bookstore
