This elegant antique Danish Art Deco hand mirror, Model No. 224, was designed by Harald Nielsen for Georg Jensen and produced in Denmark circa 1930. Expertly crafted in sterling silver with ebony inlays and an original beveled mirror plate, the design reflects the refined geometric aesthetic that distinguished Nielsen’s work during the transition from Art Nouveau to early Scandinavian Modern. The circular mirror is framed in sterling silver and joined to a broad tapered handle with subtle stepped detailing, creating a clean, architectural profile accented by the rich contrast of polished silver and ebony. Engraved with initials: AORB.
Model 224 was originally offered as part of a matching Georg Jensen vanity set that included a hand mirror, hairbrush, clothes brush, and comb. This mirror is fully labeled with the following: Harald Nielsen’s HN designer’s mark, the Georg Jensen crowned maker’s mark, STERLING DENMARK, 925, and pattern number 224. An exceptional example of early twentieth-century Danish silver design, this piece is equally suited for use or display and is highly desirable among collectors of Georg Jensen and Scandinavian decorative arts.
Georg Jensen (1866–1935)
Georg Jensen was one of Denmark’s most influential silversmiths and designers. Trained as a sculptor, he founded the Georg Jensen Silversmithy in Copenhagen in 1904, earning an international reputation for exceptional craftsmanship and artistic design. His distinctive Art Nouveau silver, inspired by natural forms and traditional craftsmanship, laid the foundation for one of the world’s most celebrated names in Scandinavian decorative arts.
Harald Nielsen (1892–1977)
Harald Nielsen was one of Georg Jensen’s most important designers and his brother-in-law, joining the Georg Jensen workshop in 1909. Following Jensen’s death in 1935, Nielsen became the company’s artistic director and helped guide its transition toward the cleaner, more geometric aesthetic of Art Deco and early Scandinavian Modern. His designs are admired for their understated elegance, exceptional craftsmanship, and enduring appeal among collectors of Danish silver.
