Bay Colony Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this exceptional vintage set of six 20th century quarter sawn oak Mission dining chairs. Inspire by the iconic Craftsman designs of the early 1900s, the chairs bear a strong resemblance to Stickley Harvey Ellis chairs. We initially thought these were Stickley chairs, however the absence of the typical Stickley brand mark found on later production pieces, along with the shape of the arm supports & construction details leads us to believe these were bench made by a skilled craftsman or small workshop. Regardless of who made them, they’re a superior set of chairs that we are excited to present to our collectors & decorators across the country.
These chairs were crafted from a premium grade of quarter sawn white oak with vibrant rays and flecks present in the grain. The chairs have a 3 slat back with comfortable curved crest rails & scrolled seat rails. A couple noticeable differences between this set and Stickley chairs would be the form of the arms on the armchairs, the ears above the crest rail on these chairs appear a tad bit shorter, and the tops of the legs at the front of the seat box are mitered to a pyramid or obelisk shape with a flat square top. The set has slip seats with a soft gold velvet like fabric free of any rips, stains, & odors. The chairs are sturdy and present well and overall are in fantastic condition with our only notes being minimal surface wear, and some wear to a couple of stretchers which we’ll have our restorer touch up with wood filler and stain to match . The side chairs measure 18 3/4” wide x 18 3/4” deep x 42” tall with an 18” seat height. The arm chairs measure 22 3/4” wide x 18 3/4” deep x 42” tall with an 18” seat height.
