Firangi type saber with khanda handle
India, 17th century
A long European Damascus steel blade, slightly curved, with a
central fuller, khanda type steel handle extended by
a guard forming an openwork basket decorated with engraved motifs.
This type of weapon, combining an ancient European blade with an
Indian hilt, is emblematic of the exchanges between
the West and India in the 17th–18th centuries.Portuguese, Italian or German blades
were imported via Goa, then
reassembled locally on Indian handles as seen here.
An Indian firangi sword with khanda hilt, 17th century.
